For decades, Oriental, NC has been a rendezvous site for countless small boat, one design class organizations. Embraced by the Neuse River... where it meets the Pamlico Sound...Oriental has excellent winds throughout the year… even in the heat of summer, there’s normally some breeze. The adjacent Pamlico Sound is 2nd only to San Francisco Bay in winds.
With a population of less than 900 permanent residents, Oriental is home to over 2000 boats… the overwhelming majority are powered by sail. March 2015 brought Oriental its first Intercollegiate Sailing event. NC State University hosted the 1st Annual Oriental SAILPACK Invitational Regatta. Nine universities took part. We have hundreds of sailors and an incredible number of folks experienced in organizing and conducting regattas. Simply put, “…Oriental speaks sailboat racing…fluently…” |
Oriental is home to numerous sailing clubs. The preeminent racing club is the Oriental Dinghy Club (ODC). ODC conducts numerous club races each year and is the organizing authority for other high profile regattas.
